The Vadstena Castle retained the status of a royal residence until 1716, and was later converted into a grain warehouse. The first large-scale reconstruction of the building took place already in the 20th century.Today, visitors to the castle can see many of its original elements, which have been carefully preserved.

Vadstena Castle is a Renaissance castle from the 16th century which is beautifully situated in the center of Vadstena with moats around. We have visited the castle during the day both with and without guided tours and in the evening, during their ghost walk. Vadstena Slott was built between 1545 and 1620 by order of King Gustav Wasa in Vadstena (Östergötlands Län) on Vättern as a moated castle. The floor plan forms a square fortress with round bastions at the corners, the three-storey main building with a central tower faces the lake. Gustav Vasa's massive castle in Vadstena was completed in 1620, but left to decay for several hundred years. During this time the castle was used as a grain and brandy warehouse.
